Charente-Maritime is an asymmetrical catamaran with the leeward hull slewed
ahead to give clear wind to the leeward sail. She can sail on port tack, but
is optimized for speed on starboard, with the crew-carrying hull to windward as
well as the single wichbone bomes, which allow a clean flow over the leeward
side of the sails. The bold and singular look of this craft stems largely from
the ambitious single beam connecting the two hulls. Making this long, single
span work takes some very clever engineering and construction, for the loads
are enourmous.
